Position Summary

The AT Training Specialist is a hands-on volunteer role dedicated to providing high-quality, one-on-one and group instruction to BPN members. This role focuses on helping blind and visually impaired professionals master the digital tools required to excel in modern workplaces. The AT Trainer works directly with members to assess their needs, deliver customized training, and ensure they can use technology to navigate their professional environments with confidence.

Key Responsibilities

Individual & Group Instruction

  • One-on-One Training: Deliver personalized training sessions to BPN members on specific hardware and software solutions based on their unique professional goals.
  • Workshop Facilitation: Lead or co-facilitate virtual workshops and webinars on popular AT topics, such as AI integration, advanced screen reader navigation, or mobile accessibility.
  • Group Courses: * Design and/or lead structured courses focused on the mastery of screen readers (JAWS, NVDA) and core productivity software including Microsoft Office 365 and Google Suite.
    • Develop curriculum for specialized applications that empower BVI professionals to streamline workflows, manage data, and enhance digital communication in the workplace.
    • Facilitate collaborative learning environments where members share best practices for navigating complex professional software.
  • Skills Assessment: Evaluate a member’s current proficiency level and identify specific gaps in their technical knowledge to create a tailored training roadmap.

Curriculum & Content Delivery:

  • Workplace Application: Teach practical, job-related skills, including efficient use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Google Workspace, and video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Teams) using assistive technology.
  • Resource Development: Create or update simplified instructional guides, "cheat sheets," or audio tutorials to support members between training sessions.
  • Technology Troubleshooting: Assist members in resolving basic technical hurdles or configuration issues that interfere with their ability to use their devices effectively.

Progress Tracking & Reporting:

  • Member Documentation: Maintain brief, accurate records of training sessions, including progress notes and goals achieved by the member.
  • Outcome Reporting: Provide regular updates to the AT Manager regarding member success stories, common challenges, and hours volunteered.
  • Feedback Loop: Suggest improvements for training materials based on direct interactions with members and evolving industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Expert Technical Knowledge: Proven proficiency in at least one primary screen reader (JAWS, NVDA, or VoiceOver) and experience with mobile accessibility (iOS or Android).
  • Instructional Ability: Strong communication skills with the patience and ability to explain complex technical concepts to learners with varying levels of experience.
  • Professional Experience: Familiarity with using AT in a professional or corporate environment is highly preferred.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to troubleshoot accessibility barriers across different websites and software applications.
  • Mission Commitment: A passion for empowering BVI individuals through technology and a commitment to BPN’s mission of professional success.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Assistive Technology Manager.

Time Commitment

Average Hours: Approximately 3–5 hours per week, depending on member needs and trainer interest. This role offers flexible scheduling. Hours are primarily driven by 1-on-1 training sessions, as well as scheduled workshops and training courses. All training engagements and course assignments are selected and scheduled based on the trainer’s specific availability.
